Following “In the Heights,” Lin-Manuel Miranda returns for another 2021 release but now in the form of a kinkajou. What’s a kinkajou? A tropical mammal and the star of another Sony Pictures Animation-produced title to launch on Netflix. Set between Havana, Cuba, and Miami, Florida, this musical adventure has further ties to Miranda since his longtime collaborators Quiara Alegría Hudes penned it. Cuban talent is well represented within the voice cast, with Juan de Marcos González, a former member of the famed Buena Vista Social Club, and Latin superstar Gloria Estefan in major roles. Vivo, the adorable furry creature, must travel from the Caribbean island to the States to deliver a song. But when the trip proves perilous, he’s forced to find an ally in Gabi (Ynairaly Simo), a young girl also trying to find her place in the world. Directed by Kirk DeMicco (“The Croods”) and Brandon Jeffords, “Vivo” marks Sony Animation’s first attempt at a song-driven story.
